Wattage

The amount of electrical power an appliance draws, which matters most when two high-draw appliances share one circuit.

Wattage is a measure of how much electrical power an appliance pulls while running. It is printed on the appliance itself or in its specs, ranging from a modest draw for a small blender to a much higher one for a toaster oven, electric kettle, or space heater. Higher wattage generally means faster heating or more blending power, but it also means more strain on the outlet and circuit behind it.

This matters most in older apartments and small kitchens where several countertop appliances share a single circuit. Running a toaster oven and an electric kettle at the same time, for instance, can push a shared circuit past its limit and trip the breaker, especially in older buildings with dated wiring. Checking an appliance's wattage before buying, and being aware of what else runs on the same outlet, avoids that surprise.

A common mistake is assuming a compact appliance automatically draws less power, when in fact many small kitchen appliances are rated just as high as full-size versions because heating elements do not shrink much with the housing around them. If breakers trip repeatedly, the fix is usually spreading appliances across separate circuits or outlets rather than buying a different appliance entirely.
