Multi-cooker

An electric pot that pressure cooks, slow cooks, steams, and sometimes sautes, replacing several single-purpose appliances.

A multi-cooker is an electric countertop pot that combines several cooking functions, typically pressure cooking, slow cooking, steaming, rice cooking, and a saute setting, into one appliance. Instead of storing a separate slow cooker, rice cooker, and steamer, all of which take up cabinet space that a small kitchen does not have, one pot handles all of it with different programmed settings.

Pressure cooking is usually the headline feature, since it cooks dried beans, tough cuts of meat, and grains far faster than conventional stovetop methods by building up steam pressure inside a sealed pot. The trade-off is a learning curve around the sealing ring, the release valve, and the fact that recipes need converting from conventional cook times, since pressure cooking timing does not map directly onto oven or stovetop timing.

A frequent mistake is buying a multi-cooker to replace a rice cooker or slow cooker specifically, then finding that any single function performs a little worse than a dedicated appliance built only for that job. It is a genuine space saver for a kitchen with only room for one large countertop appliance, but a household that cooks rice daily may still prefer a dedicated compact rice cooker alongside it.
