Vertical storage

Using wall and cabinet height, not just floor and counter footprint, to store items in a small kitchen.

Vertical storage means using the height of a room, rather than its floor or counter footprint, to hold items in a kitchen where square footage is fixed and already spoken for. Wall-mounted shelves above counters, hanging rails under cabinets, and over-the-door racks on a pantry or cabinet door all add storage without claiming any additional floor space, which is usually the more scarce resource in a small kitchen.

The areas people skip most often are the wall space above a counter's backsplash, the inside of cabinet doors, and the gap above upper cabinets near the ceiling, all of which can hold racks, hooks, or bins for items used less frequently. Under-shelf baskets that hang from the underside of an existing shelf effectively double that shelf's storage without adding a single new fixture.

A common mistake is mounting shelves or racks at a height that looks good but is awkward to actually reach daily, or hanging heavy cast iron or a stand mixer from a rail rated only for light utensils. Check a rail or hook's weight rating before loading it, and keep frequently used items at arm height while pushing rarely used ones higher or lower.
