Magnetic knife strip

A magnetic knife strip is a bar, usually wood or stainless steel with a magnetic core, mounted on a wall or backsplash to hold knives by their blades. It replaces a knife block, which can take up a surprising amount of counter depth, and it keeps blades visible and easy to grab instead of buried loose in a drawer.

Placement matters more than the strip itself. Mounting height should keep the sharpest edges above the reach of children and away from where people naturally brush past while cooking, and the strip should be far enough from the sink or stove that steam and splatter do not sit on the blades. Most strips hold knives well beyond kitchen use too, including scissors and some magnetic measuring spoons.

The most common mistake is mounting into drywall alone rather than a stud or proper anchor, since a loaded strip with several knives is heavier than it looks and can pull loose. A second mistake is slapping knives onto the magnet from the side rather than laying the flat of the blade against it first, which is safer and puts less stress on the mount.
