Collapsible cookware
Colanders, measuring cups, and other tools made from flexible silicone that fold or squash flat for storage.
Collapsible cookware refers to kitchen tools, most often colanders and measuring cups, made from flexible silicone over a rigid rim or base so the item can fold down or squash nearly flat when not in use. A collapsible colander that is a normal bowl shape in use can flatten to a fraction of its height for a drawer or a narrow gap beside the fridge.
The trade-off for that flexibility is generally durability and heat tolerance compared to rigid plastic or stainless versions, so check the manufacturer's temperature rating before using collapsible pieces with boiling pasta water or hot food straight off the stove. Silicone quality varies a lot between brands, and cheaper collapsible tools can develop cracks along the fold lines faster than sturdier ones.
A frequent mistake is buying collapsible versions of everything on the assumption that flexible always means more compact, when a rigid nesting set sometimes stores just as small while lasting longer under daily use. Collapsible tools earn their place best for items used occasionally, like a colander or a large mixing bowl, rather than daily-use tools that face constant flexing and washing.
